With the option to buy directly from Disney or to purchase resale DVC points, there is a lot to learn and consider if you're thinking about buying in. DVC is a great investment in your future Disney vacations as it brings the promise of fun trips every year. However, the heavy price tag does make it a big decision. If you're looking for the best possible value when buying DVC points or you're interested in a home resort that opened long ago, it sounds like buying resale DVC points could be the best option for you to explore.

Can You Buy Resale DVC Points From Disney?

Yes, you can buy resale DVC points from Disney directly but probably not in the way you're hoping. Disney Vacation Club refers to the resale DVC points it offers as purchasing at a 'sold out' resort. This might sound like a good idea if your dream home resort is one that opened in the past and sold out its inventory. The biggest difference between buying from a member who is selling DVC points versus buying someone else's contract directly from Disney is.. the price. Disney can sell DVC timeshare any way, within reason, the law and contracts, that best suits the company's interests. So while you can buy resale DVC points from Disney directly, it won't be at a lower rate but will be packaged as a new contract and at direct prices. Sometimes, Disney even adds certain numbers of years onto a contract. For example, deed expirations on original Old Key West contracts are 2042 but there are now also some that expire in 2057.

Do members sell DVC points back to Disney?

There are a few different ways Disney Vacation Club acquires product to sell Disney points as a new contract. First, Disney offers members a fraction of the value to buy the contract back. Despite that, there are people who choose to sell DVC points directly back to Disney. So, yes, you can also sell DVC contract to Disney but it probably won't make the most sense financially.

The company also buys back, at a higher price than the first mentioned, through Right of First Refusal. This is a clause in the Disney Vacation Club contract that gives the company the chance to purchase a contract back before it's sold as resale DVC points to another potential member if they choose.

Lastly and unfortunately, Disney gets some contracts back through foreclosure. No matter how much Disney pays for resale DVC points, they can repackage them as a new contract. When you're buying direct from Disney Vacation Club, even if it's technically a resale contract, you will always be paying their direct prices. 

DVC Resale vs. Direct Pricing

Buying actual DVC resale usually means a 30-50% savings over buying direct whether at sold out resorts, or newer resorts that aren't sold out yet, which Disney is actively promoting. Since then, Disney’s direct prices for some resorts have increased even further.

As a business, Disney Vacation Club always has their own agenda. They tend to focus on selling resorts that aren't yet sold out. Currently that means Riviera and Aulani. If that's not what your heart is set on, it benefits them to have other properties to offer. So, yes you can buy resale DVC points directly from Disney but they sell DVC membership at the much higher direct prices.
