If the first place you think of vacationing is Walt Disney World, join the club. Disney Vacation Club that is. It's like financially promising yourself you'll take a magical trip every year for years to come. There are options, too. Like the ability to choose which resort you'll call your 'home', more on that in a minute, and if you'll buy directly from Disney or find a reduced price contract on the DVC resale market. How does DVC resale work? The answer might surprise you. Whether you buy resale or direct, the booking process for the point based Disney timeshare and most of the way DVC works is exactly the same. Let's go over some basics about Disney Vacation Club, resale, how it all works and what you can expect if you decide to purchase DVC resale.

How Does DVC Work: Resale

DVC resale mostly works the same as when you buy direct from Disney though there is more flexibility and transparency in choosing a contract. Disney is currently actively selling Disney's Riviera Resort and Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa which means they are not yet 'sold out' and those will be their first priority to offer interested potential buyers. Although Disney Vacation Club does have an inventory of contracts at sold out resorts, they are typically not as accessible and there's less of a variety to choose from. The specifics you'll choose when finding a DVC contract on the resale market are Home Resort, Use Year, Point Value, deed expiration and more.

Your Home Resort is where you'll have an eleven month out booking advantage versus seven months at other DVC resorts. Your Use Year is when points become available each year but also important to remember in regards to banking your points. The Point Value you choose is the number of points and determines how many nights you can book. The deed expiration shows you how many years you will enjoy as a Disney Vacation Club Member with that contract in particular. The year of expiration is unable to be changed and you'll notice each resort has a different expiration based on when it opened. 

All of these contract details are clearly shown on DVC resale listings so you can peruse with confidence. The basics of Disney Vacation Club like the point charts and how many nights you can book with your points all work the same. Resale DVC Members receive free resort parking and access to Top of the World Lounge just like Members who buy direct. However with DVC resale, there's also flexibility in negotiating the price.

It's good to know some of the ways resale works differently. Some of the perks and Membership Extras like Disney Vacation Club discounts, Member Events and privileges are not part of what is included for those who buy resale. If you buy resale at Riviera you won't be able to book at other resorts with those points. Those with other Home Resorts can not book Riviera with resale DVC points. In addition to the Riviera restrictions, those who buy DVC through resale have other booking restrictions for resorts outside of DVC. In comparison, the amount of savings up front when you buy resale is clear and substantial. It certainly beats 10% off dining at some restaurants at certain times.
