How to Save on DVC Resale

The per point price of Disney Vacation Club varies by resort. The amount of points you buy ultimately determines how costly it is. Buying a DVC resale contract is a great way to pay less for the same fantastic deluxe resort hotel stays.

Then, if you don't need to use your points right away, you can save by shopping for a contract that doesn't have all of the points available to use.

You can shop for contracts with fewer points available at the time of the sale. This is different than the overall point value.

Understanding Point Value vs Points Available with DVC

When you buy a contract, the number of points you buy is what you receive annually. An example of this is, let's say you buy 150 points. Every use year, which is the month your points are allotted each year, you're given 150 points. It's possible to book with those points or you can bank, or save, them to be used the next year. It's also possible to borrow points from the following year.

At any given time, a Member may have points banked from last year, the current points from this year and the opportunity to borrow from the following year.

When a Member is selling their points, this collective point availability, known as points available, affects the price of the contract.

Here's why: If someone who is selling their contract has saved their points up, there is more opportunity for the next owner to book rooms. On the contrary, if someone has used points from last year, this year and next year, there aren't as many vacations to book with that contract.

If a contract has had all of the points stripped from it, it will be worth less. This presents an opportunity for savings for potential buyers. There are also scenarios where the points have been used for the current year but next year's are available.

What's right for you depends on your budget and when you would like to use the points.

Not Traveling Soon? Save By Buying a DVC Contract with Less Points Available

The discussion around how many points to buy always requires a little strategy. It usually starts with DVC point charts. You'll have to consider:

• how long you like to stay
• what time of year you like to visit
• what kind of rooms you like
• which resort, or resorts, you want to stay at

One thing not talked about enough when deciding on a point value to purchase is banking or borrowing points. You may not be one to visit every year. Maybe for DVC, what works best for you is booking with points every other year.

It's common for those traveling from abroad, like the United Kingdom, to visit for a longer period of time. A two week vacation is standard for many visiting from outside of the country. Maybe you stay longer but don't visit annually. DVC can still work for you.

If you visit every other year, you may not need to buy a contract that has points ready to use right now.

A contract with no points available could be the most cost effective option.
