A lot goes into planning a Disney World vacation and your hotel choice can change everything about your trip. Disney's resort hotels have different price and amenity tiers and are individually themed. Some are right next to popular theme parks while others require a bus ride to get where you're going. The close proximity to the magic is still the top reason many visitors choose Disney hotels over other options. The conveniences of Disney resorts can come with a high price. Is a Disney resort worth it? Some of the top reasons for staying at Disney hotels have been discontinued. What are the perks of staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel these days? These are the things to consider when planning where to stay.

Is Staying at a Disney Resort Worth the Price?

As you peruse the Disney resorts' nightly prices, remember that there are some included benefits.

You can now book a Disney World trip up through October of 2026. November and December bookings for the same year will be available at a later date. Let's take a look at some of the perks and benefits offered to Disney resort guests.

First, here is what's new or special in 2026:

• There is a free dining plan for kids offered in 2026 at Disney World. Disney says guests can, "get a free dining plan for their kids (ages 3 to 9) when purchasing a dining plan as part of their package for the other members of their party (ages 10 and up)." You can also combine this with other special offers which makes it even more exciting.
• The free Disney World water park admission on check in day offer is coming back for the summer of 2026. This is the same Disney resort hotel guest benefit that is offered in 2025, it just looks to be for the summer season only instead of all year. Specific dates for the offer have not yet been shared.

Guests of Disney World hotels continue to get the following benefits in 2026:

• Free parking at theme parks
• Complimentary transportation options to the theme parks and Disney Springs like buses, boats and the Skyliner
• Early access to book dining reservations for the entire stay
• Early access to purchase and book Lightning Lane for the entire stay
• Early access to purchase tickets to some special events
• The ability to book the Disney Dining Plan in your vacation package
• 30 minutes of Early Theme Park Entry every day, at every park
• Extended Evening Theme Park hours for those staying at Disney Deluxe Resorts or Disney Deluxe Villa Resorts

The free overnight parking at hotels returned a few years back so that's no longer a budget consideration.
Also, Disney World water parks offer free parking for everyone, not just resort guests.

Are there characters at Disney resorts?

Depending on where you stay, you may get to see characters at your Disney World resort hotel. There are Disney character meals at resorts which is the only for sure way to see them at your hotel. Fancy a meeting with Minnie in her seaside best at Disney's Beach Club Resort buffet Cape May Cafe? Note that character meals are only at deluxe resorts which offer top tier amenities.

Then there are surprise character visits. This started happening a few years ago during the 50th anniversary celebration of Walt Disney World Resort. If you see a big colorful, official Disney vehicle at your resort, the characters might be there. Ask the front desk about potential opportunities to meet characters at your resort. Know that the surprise meet and greets are typically at random and not guaranteed.

Is the Disney Dining Plan a good deal?

Disney hotel stays don't include the dining plan for free but the option to purchase it as an add on for the duration, or number of nights, of your stay. Then you can pay with credits at various Disney restaurants depending on which dining plan you purchase, the dining plan or quick service dining plan.

The Disney Dining Plan does not provide discounted meals but rather the convenience of prepaying for them. It can be a helpful budgeting tool and nice to simply tap your Magic Band to pay. The dining plan does not include gratuity but you can use your Magic Band to charge it to your room or use cash or credit card to tip.

In the past, Disney has offered free dining promotions for those booking a vacation package. In 2026, Disney has an offer where guests can, "get a free dining plan for their kids (ages 3 to 9) when purchasing a dining plan as part of their package for the other members of their party (ages 10 and up)." This may be something to consider if you're trying to decide if a Disney resort hotel stay is worth it to you.

Does Disney World have an airport shuttle for resort guests?

Disney's Magical Express was cancelled years ago. At this time, there is no complimentary airport shuttle service that Disney offers to resort guests. This conveniently used to include luggage check in and delivery to your room as well.

Do Disney World hotels have luggage transfer to and from the airport?

Luggage transfer went away with Disney's Magical Express. Then in 2025, a select group of hotels began offering luggage check in for those departing but only to Southwest Airlines passengers. With this, guests can drop off their luggage at the resort, it's transported to the airport and their plane and they can pick it up at baggage claim at their destination airport. It's assumed the program will expand so look for opportunities at your resort.

I'll be in the parks all day, is it still worth it to stay at a Disney resort?

Even if you plan to be in the parks from rope drop to fireworks, it may still be worth it to stay at a Disney resort hotel. You can save a lot of time staying close to your favorite parks. Consider that you could be taking a boat to Hollywood Studios from Disney's BoardWalk Inn instead of driving on to Disney property each morning, parking and making the trek in from the oversized parking lot. That convenience can save time and energy, starting your morning off relaxed instead of rushed. It can also give you a head start when resort guests are treated to early entry.

While you may be planning to be in the parks all day to be able to do the most, you can think about a different strategy when you stay at a Disney resort. When it's easy enough to get back to your resort, you can pop in and out of the park on the same day without losing as much time. You may discover an afternoon break and heading back for Extended Evening Theme Park hours, offered only to deluxe resort guests, is a more productive use of your time. If the waits are lower, you can get more done in less time.
