The Pros and Cons of the Cabins at Fort Wilderness

It's one of the newest resorts at Disney World but at one of the oldest resort properties.

Pros of The Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort

Fort Wilderness is charming and nature focused.

When you arrive at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground, it feels unlike any where else you'll stay at Disney World. It's still got a special quaintness after all these decades. You feel enveloped in nature thanks to the tall pine trees that surround the property and buildings. Wildlife may pay you a visit while you're visiting. 

It's extra festive at Fort Wilderness.

You'll be surprised to see just how many guests decorate for Halloween and Christmas and just how detailed some of the displays are. There are even seasonal golf cart parades at Fort Wilderness to celebrate holidays. Driving around on your rented golf cart to look at how other guests have decorated their outdoor spaces is a highlight of staying anywhere at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. The RV folks tend to go all out with inflatables and lights. You may even see full scenes with moving parts. Fort Wilderness has its own culture and folks that stay there regularly embrace it fully.

The cabins are brand new.

The cabins at Fort Wilderness are being put in all new starting in 2024. Yes, cabins have long been a part of the Fort Wilderness experience. However, upon creating the DVC home resort at this property, all new cabins were put in. They are still a mobile home type of construction but present a much more modern style. The new Fort Wilderness cabins have a different layout than the long time, dark, log cabin feeling structures.

The amenities are awesome at the Fort Wilderness cabins.

Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground has a great reputation for amenities. You can ride horses, rent canoes and meet Chip and Dale at a campfire. There is nothing else like it at Walt Disney World Resort. Fort Wilderness provides ample opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors though some offerings have a reasonable fee. 

Cons of The Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort

There will probably be some down side to any resort depending on what you like.

The dues are high at the Fort Wilderness Cabins

The annual dues are pretty costly at this resort. Even as a newer property, annual dues are up at $11.88 in 2025. This could be because of the nature of keeping up the cabins and possibly replacing them over time.

It's a resort you need to take a bus to get around.

If you like a smaller resort that's easy to get around, Fort Wilderness isn't for you. You have your own parking spaces at your cabin which is convenient. You can't actually drive a car around all parts of Fort Wilderness though. You'll need to rent a golf cart or use the bus system to get to some areas like where the Magic Kingdom boat pick up is.

Resale contracts are rare and restricted at Fort Wilderness DVC.

Any time a new home resort debuts, we can expect to wait a few years to see DVC resale contracts available there. It makes sense that new buyers are enjoying their contracts right after they buy. Over time, as people change their minds for various reasons, we see resale contracts come on the market. The resale restrictions might make this property less appealing to you though. When you own resale DVC at The Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort, you can only use those points to book there. Also, you can't use resale points here if you own anywhere else. For some this might not be an issue. The cabins have always had a dedicated following and you might prefer the uniqueness of these accommodations. Just know you can't stay at different resorts with resale at the Fort Wilderness cabins like owning at the original 14 DVC resorts will allow you to.
