Universal Orlando's newest theme park brings dragons, wizards, monsters and video game characters together to create an unmatched experience. Some of the themes in this park are a little more mature and may be too scary for, or simply not appeal to, kids of a certain age. There is still a lot for kids, and families with children of different ages, to do in Epic Universe. What is there for kids to do at Epic Universe? Is Epic Universe fun for little kids? We'll break it down by land, or world as they are titled in this park, and go over height requirements, simple ride explanations and what kids will love about the new Universal Orlando Resort park.

Is Epic Universe kid friendly? Is Epic Universe good for toddlers?

Universal is known for its impressive set building that creates immersive theming and also for wild thrill rides. Some portals, or worlds, in Epic Universe may not be suitable or entertaining for small children. There are also quite a few things toddlers can't enjoy due to height restrictions. Epic Universe does have multiple play areas just for kids though and Super Nintendo World and the How to Train Your Dragon world will both surely be a hit with younger crowds.

Epic Universe Rides & Attractions for Kids By Land with Short Description

There are five worlds in Epic Universe. You enter the main portal which takes you into Celestial Park. Off of this area, there are four additional portals you can enter. What is in each land is contained meaning you can't see most of the area unless you enter it. This is important because it's possible to completely avoid the Dark Universe area of the park and monsters if that's not suitable for everyone in your party.

Celestial Park

• Astronomica (compass themed splash pad that also lights up at night)
• Constellation Carousel (creative carousel) - no height requirement but children under 48" must be accompanied by a Supervising Companion and hand-held infants can not ride
• Stardust Racers (outdoor, tall rollercoaster) - 48"

More to do in this area that's suitable for all ages:

• Visit the Cosmos Fountain in the back of the park for fountain shows synced with music throughout the day including when it lights up at night.
• Entertainment in this area may include walk around characters like a living statue, a band on a stage near the Cosmos Fountain and more.

How to Train Your Dragon - Isle of Berk

• Viking Training Camp (outdoor, interactive, multi-story play area)
• The Untrainable Dragon (indoor show) - no height requirement
• Fyre Drill (water shooting ride) - no height requirement but children under 48" must be accompanied by a Supervising Companion and hand-held infants can not ride
• Hiccup’s Wing Gliders (outdoor family coaster) - 40"
• Dragon Racer’s Rally (outdoor flying ride) - 48"

Characters in the Isle of Berk

There are quite a few characters to meet in the Isle of Berk.

• Toothless and Hiccup - outdoor meet and greet with queue
• Astrid and Stormfly - sometimes outdoor meet and greet with queue, sometimes wandering nearby
• Night Lights baby dragons - outdoor sighting near Spit Fyre Grill
• Gobber in his workshop - outdoors next to the Fyre Drill attraction
• Ruffnut and Tuffnut - wandering often near the Mead Hall and Gobber's workshop
• More vikings - you may see other friendly vikings wandering the land as well

More to do in this area that's suitable for all ages:

• The Isle of Berk has dragons to spot all throughout the land. Some are placed up high over stores while others are low in little enclosures.
• There are also interactive elements that are great for kids throughout the Isle of Berk like a wheel you can spin to make a Toothless figure flap his wings.
• You may see a flying dragon just before the sun sets!

Super Nintendo World

• Yoshi’s Adventure (slow moving, indoor & outdoor ride) - 34"
• Mine-Cart Madness (themed indoor, outdoor family coaster) - 40"
• Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge (indoor, augmented reality dark ride) - 40"

Meet your friends from the world of Super Nintendo in this colorful land.

• Princess Peach - meet and greet in gazebo next to her castle
• Mario and Luigi - meet and greet in the middle of the land on the ground floor
• Toad - meet and greet near where Mario and Luigi meet
• Donkey Kong - meet and greet to the right after you enter DK area

More to do in this area that's suitable for all ages:

• If you plan to purchase a Power-Up Band, there is a lot more to do. This is a slap bracelet that pairs with the Universal Orlando app and helps you interact with different elements in this portal. You can punch bricks like Mario and collect stickers in the app but there are also actual interactive games in the land that you can play and win to collect digital keys. The Power-Up Bands are fun and a great keepsake. You can manage with one per party if you have kids that will share and take turns. The Power-Up Bands are more than $40 and come in different character styles.

Dark Universe

• Curse of the Werewolf (spinning outdoor rollercoaster) - 40"
• Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment (dark ride with sudden movements & monsters) - 48"

• The Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience in Dark Universe is open for adults and children too. Children 5 and up can enjoy this experience in the spooky parlor just inside the land. Transform into Frankenstein's monster, a vampire or others starting at $45 for a full face look.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Ministry of Magic

• Le Cirque Arcanus (indoor circus style show with fantastic beasts) - no height requirement
• Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry (dark ride with sudden movements) - 40"

Characters in the Wizarding World at Epic Universe

Find friendly wizards to chat with around Place Cachée, the wizarding area of Paris.

• Aurors - wander the land
• Wizarding students - wander the land, often in a group of three
• Cosme Acajor - found in her wand shop Cosme Acajor Baguettes Magique

More to do in this area that may be suitable for younger guests:

• Wand play is a big part of the Wizarding World. This is an interactive, walk around experience and way to interact with the land when you purchase a wand. Some of the new wands sold in Paris at Epic Universe connect to the Universal Orlando app, light up and have haptic vibrations. If you already have a wand from Universal, you can still use older styles in the new land in this park.
• If your little ones like Harry Potter and the Fantastic Beast films specifically, they may like finding different beasts throughout the land in window displays like nifflers!
• You can speak with a portrait person, just like in the movies, in the area near the Le Gobelet Noir quick service restaurant.

Epic Universe Rides for Kids By Height Requirement

How tall do kids have to be for the rides at this park? The Epic Universe height requirements will help you plan your day. You won't have to decide if a ride is appropriate for your child if they don't meet the minimum height requirement.

Also good to know as kids continue to grow, there is a height stick after security and ticket scan but just before the park's main portal on the right that has all of the ride height requirements shown.

Tip: Take a picture of your little one in front of this in the beginning of the day to reference later on.

What rides are best for kids at Epic Universe?

Really every ride in Epic Universe is kid friendly if they meet the height requirement except for Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment and maybe Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry. These will vary by child.

Is Monsters Unchained too scary for kids?

The monsters attraction is pretty scary and features many monster animatronics. There aren't direct jump scares and the animatronics don't come particularly close to the ride vehicle. It is creepy when they veer your direction or look your way though. That might be too much for some kids. The queue is also extra creepy and the Frankenstein's monster theme is carried throughout. He appears in the queue pre-show and is very tall.

Maybe your child loves halloween and these characters. You know your child best. However, this may not serve as the best way to introduce your child to these monsters for the first time.

Is Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry too intense for kids?

The Harry Potter ministry ride is about the same level of intensity as the Gringott's ride in Diagon Alley. It moves differently, closer to the attraction inside Hogwarts, but features some of the same bad guy style characters. If your child has seen the films and gone on the other indoor Universal Wizarding World attractions, this seems to be comparable thrill and intensity wise.

Does Universal have child swap or rider switch? Yes!

Something else to help you plan a visit to theme parks when you have a little one is child swap rooms. At Epic Universe, many child swap rooms are themed and have a tv playing something related to where you are. If someone in your party is too small, or doesn't want to ride something, child swap can help.

A member of your party can wait with the little one, or ones, while the rest of your party goes on the attraction. When they are done, you switch places so everyone able and willing to ride can do so. If there are only two adults, you simply take turns waiting and riding. Let's say there are three adults in your party. In my experience, one of the adults may be able to ride again so no one has to go alone. Talk to the Team Member at the attraction for the specifics.
